Multilayer isothermal bags

The Challenge

The useful life of food products is an integral part to their safety. Isothermal bags keep frozen food temperature for a certain period allowing their quality and safe storage.

Some supermarket chains are already providing these bags to customers could ensure that frozen foods would be well accommodated in their way from the supermarket to home. However, the manufacture process for these bags is really complex: they are made from a wide variety of materials (plastic, foam, plastic handle and clip) requiring a great amount of handwork. Consequently, the recycling process is also harder.

The Solution

We were challenged by a client, and developed an isothermal bag made from several overlapping layers of film and an adhesive closing system, using just polyethylene as a raw material.

This bag has no clips, foams or plastic handles, and does not require as much hand works, which reflects on its lower cost and simpler recycling process!

The tests performed by Centro Nacional de Embalagem (CNE) proved that this item had a similar performance to the foam isothermal bag in the first 2/3 hours. The several layers and the air between them make heat penetration harder and keep the cold temperature of foods, sealing and accommodate frozen food successfully from the supermarket to the customer’s house.
